When is the best weather in Cayman Islands?

the weather is good all year and the trade winds ensure it doesn’t get too hot.
Peak season runs between December and April. The rainy season runs from May to
November and visitors are advised to keep an eye on the weather reports in the
days before arrival as there is a slim chance of hurricanes. Many regard the
wet season as the best time to visit – room rates are cheaper, the beaches less
crowded and the rain comes in short, sharp bursts that does not impact on holiday
fun. The average winter temperature is 76F which goes up to an average of 86F in
the summer. Humidity levels range from an average of 68% to 92%.

The average summer temperature is 80 degrees, dropping to 75 degrees in winter.


Do I need a passport to visit Cayman Islands?

PASSPORTS: U.S. citizens who travel to a country where a valid U.S. passport is
not required will need documentary evidence of their U.S. citizenship and identity.
Proof of U.S. citizenship includes an expired U.S. passport, a certified (original)
birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization, Certificate of Citizenship, or
Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States. To prove identity, a valid
driver’s license or government identification card are acceptable provided they
identify you by physical description or photograph. However, for travel overseas
and to facilitate reentry into the U.S., a valid U.S. passport is the best
documentation available and unquestionably proves your U.S. citizenship.


Is the water safe to drink?

The piped water in the Cayman Islands is completely safe to cook with or drink.
All hotels and condos and most restaurants and private homes are connected to
the city water supply. The water is originally pumped from the sea and then
purified by reverse osmosis.


Do I need electrical adaptors for my hairdryer/radio etc?

The Cayman Islands use the same electrical standards as the USA – 110 volts,
60 Hz. Most of our electronics and appliances are imported from the USA, and
any travel items such as blowdryers, electric razors and travel clocks will
work.


Should I exchange my money for local currency?

Cayman Islands Dollar (CI$) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of CI$100,
50, 25, 10, 5 and 1. Coins are in denominations of 25, 10, 5 and 1 cents.

Currency exchange:
US Dollars circulate freely and are the best currency to exchange. ATMs accepting
Visa and MasterCard with Cirrus affiliation are located at Cayman National Bank
and other banks, and at Owen Roberts International Airport.

Currency restrictions:
No restriction on import or export of foreign or local currency apart from import
of Jamaican dollars, which is restricted to J$20.


Are there any airport fees?

CI$20 or US$25. Travelers under 12 years of age and transit passengers continuing
their journey within 24 hours are exempt.


What is the legal drinking/gambling age?

The legal age for drinking alcoholic beverages on the Cayman Islands is 18 years.
A licensee may lose his license or be fined for serving alcoholic beverages to any
underage person.

Any Casinos?
No. We do not have any casinos in the Cayman Islands. Gambling on the islands is
prohibited by law.


Can I get married in Cayman Islands?

You can get married in Cayman in 24 hours. Documents required from both partners
are proof of identity, your Cayman Islands embarkation/disembarkation card, certified
or original copies of divorce decrees/death certificates.

What if we just want to renew our vows?

All you would need is a marriage officer and your proof of marriage. All other details
relating to your special moment can be arranged at your discretion.

Can I get married at any time of day?

All weddings held in the Cayman Islands must take place between 6am and 8pm.

Visitors have to call ahead and arrange for an authorized person to marry
them. The name of the “marriage officer,” as it is called, has to appear on
the application for a marriage license. The application for a special marriage
license costs $200 and can be obtained from the Deputy Secretary’s Office, 3rd
Floor, Government Administration Building, George Town (tel. 345/949-7900). There
is no waiting period. Present a birth certificate, the embarkation/disembarkation
cards issued by the island’s immigration authorities, and, if applicable, divorce

Can I bring my pet to Cayman Islands?

To import a dog or cat you must obtain an import permit from the Cayman Islands
Department of Agriculture. To obtain an import permit you must meet strict import
requirements, including microchip identification, rabies vaccination and testing,
tapeworm and tick treatment, and obtaining an Official Veterinary Health
Certificate, all within certain timelines.

Can I use my cellular telephone in Cayman Islands?

TDMA network. Network providers are Cable & Wireless Caribbean Cellular,
Digicel Cayman LTD (website: www.digicelcayman.com) and Wireless Ventures
LTD (website: www.attwireless.com), offering GSM 850/1900, GSM 900/1800
and GSM 850/1900, respectively. Unregistered roaming is available – visitors
with TDMA handsets can make calls without registering, provided they can give
a credit card number.

Internet cafes throughout the Cayman Islands and many hotels also offer
Internet facilities.


What is the Dress code in Cayman Islands?

Most restaurants require shoes and shirts, and shorts instead of long pants
are generally acceptable. Some of the upscale restaurants may require slacks
for evening dinner. Please do not wear bathing suits or “skimpy” beach wear
beyond the beach or cruise ship. Note that there are no nude beaches in the
Cayman Islands and that public nudity and topless bathing are prohibited by
law. Dress is casual and public nudity, including topless sunbathing, is
strickly prohibited. A beach cover-up shirt, or dress is required when you
leave the beach. For nightime dining, casual elegance – something more than
T-shirt and shorts – are preferred.


Do you need a driving License?

Driving is on the left-hand side of the road on the Cayman Islands. The law
also requires mandatory wearing of seat belts. Visitors must obtain temporary
drivers licenses from the police station or car rental agency (21 years old),
easily granted upon presenting a valid drivers licence from their home state,
county or parish. The fee is US$7.50. Mopeds are available for rent. You are
required by law to wear a helmet at all times!

New residents are allowed to drive using their current foreign licenses for a
maximum of 3 months from date of arrival. Within the 3-month period, a local
driving license must be obtained. Vehicles must also be licensed, and proof of
insurance is required along with a vehicle inspection certificate for licensing.
A no-claims certificate must be produced to obtain appropriate insurance discounts,
and it is recommended that you obtain this from your current insurance company prior
to arriving in Cayman. A no-claims discount of 50 percent is available.

What are the entry requirements in Cayman Islands?

A passport is preferred, however, American, Canadian, and British citizens can
also use an original birth certificate with raised seal and official photo
identification. All visitors must also have an onward or return ticket.

What is the lanquage in Cayman Islands?

English is the official language, with a distinctive ‘brogue’ reflecting heritage
of Welsh, Scottish and English ancestors still distinguishing the speech of the
Caymanian people. The number of Jamaican residents in the workforce means the
Jamaican patois and accompanying heavier accent is also common. Spanish, particularly
regional dialects of Central America and Cuba, is also widely spoken.


What are the store hours in Cayman Islands?

Shops are open weekdays from 9 to 5, and Saturday in George Town from 10 to 2;
in outer shopping plazas they are open from 10 to 5. Shops are usually closed
Sunday except in hotels or when cruise ships are visiting.

Cayman is a duty-free destination which means many exciting opportunities for you
to save on such things as watches, china and crystal, perfumes and fine jewelry,
including authentic treasure coin jewelry, on Grand Cayman and at a few stores on
Cayman Brac. Prices on perfume, watches and select luxury items may be as much as
30% less expensive here. In addition to traditional duty free selections, varied
and interesting shopping, from chic European fashions to outstanding local art,
delights visitors in speciality stores, hotel boutiques and shopping plazas.


What about tipping?

In restaurants tip about 15-20 per cent. Some hotels and restaurants automatically
add your tip to the bill so check first as it is not necessary to leave an additional
tip. Tip taxi drivers 10-15 per cent and an additional $1 per bag if they carry your
bags. Tip bell staff $1-$2 per bag; housekeeping staff $1-$2 per day (at the end of
your stay); valet parking attendants $1-$2; hotel shuttle van drivers at least $1
per person; and fishing and dive boat captain and crew $10-$20, which will be split
amongst the crew.


Can you use credit cards?

All major credit cards are widely accepted. Check with your credit or debit card
company for details of merchant acceptability and other services which may be
available.

Travelers cheques:
Readily accepted. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travelers are
advised to take travelers cheques in US Dollars.


Is there a best time to visit the island?

Very warm, tropical climate throughout the year. High temperatures are moderated by
trade winds. The rainy season is from May to October but showers are generally of
short duration. The hurricane season is from June to November and, since the islands
are low-lying, there is a high risk of flooding if a storm hits them.


Is there an airport?

Grand Cayman (GCM) (Owen Roberts International Airport) is 2km (1 mile) east of
the city. Taxis are available to the center (travel time – 10 minutes), operating
from 0600 to 2300, for a fare of about US$10. There is also an airport bus available
that must be pre-booked. Airport facilities include an outgoing duty free shop for
all international departures, banks/bureaux de change, post office, car hire
(Avis, Budget, Coconut and Hertz) and a bar/restaurant (open for all arrivals and
departures). Cayman Brac (CYB) (Gerard Smith Airport) is 8km (5 miles) from the town.

What about Taxes?

Restaurants often automatically add a 15% gratuity to their bill on food and
beverage: visitors should check before adding gratuities. A 10% government tax
is added at all accommodations. Otherwise, there’s no tax on goods or services
paid at the consumer level. There’s a considerable import duty already paid for
virtually everything brought onto the island with several exceptions, including
cameras, books and coffee.


What about Banks?

Local full service banks include FirstCaribbean International Bank, Scotia Bank,
Royal Bank of Canada, Bank of Butterfield, Cayman National Bank, and others. Most
offer both U.S. and CI checking and savings accounts, CDs in a variety of currencies,
ATM services, and some issue local credit cards. All banks operate on a “know your
customer” basis and require references before opening an account. Large amounts of
cash are not accepted for deposit at any local banks. Banks are open Monday through
Friday from 9 to 4. Post offices are open weekdays from 8:30 to 3:30 and Saturday
from 8:30 to 11:30.


What about Crime?

The crime threat in Cayman Islands is generally considered low although travelers
should always take normal precautions when in unfamiliar surroundings. Petty theft,
pickpocketing and purse snatchings occur. A few cases involving sexual assault have
been reported to the Embassy. However, it is difficult to gauge the number of sexual
assaults, especially situations involving acquaintance rape or use of “date rape”
drugs as incidents may go unreported. Police in the Cayman Islands have alluded to
increased availability of drugs and several persons have been arrested for possession
with intent to distribute Ecstasy, among other drugs. American citizens should avoid
buying, selling, holding or taking illegal drugs under any circumstances.

What about island hopping?
