By Bike & Moped:

You can rent Honda or Yamaha motorcycles
for $35 per day ($150 per week) at J. T.’s
Rent-A-Scoot (Parham, Antigua. PHONE: 268/463-3578).

By Boat:

Barbuda Express (PHONE: 268/464-9453 or 268/773-9766,
www.antiguaferries.com) runs five days weekly
(call for the changing schedule), leaving Antigua’s
Heritage Quay Ferry Dock at 8:45 AM and 1 PM, returning
from Barbuda at 11 AM and 3:30 PM. The fare is EC$80
one-way, EC$140 round-trip (a day tour costs US$120).

By Car:

Gasoline in Antigua tends to be more expensive than
in the continental United States. The main roads, by
and large, are in good condition, although there are
bronco-busting dirt stretches leading to some more
remote locations and a few hilly areas that flood easily
and become impassable for a day or two. Driving is on
the left, although many locals drive in the middle —
or think nothing of stopping at the roadside to chat.
Don’t be flustered by honking: it’s the Caribbean

Car Rentals:

To rent a car, you need a valid driver’s license and
a temporary permit ($20), available through the rental
agent. Costs start about $50 per day in season, with
unlimited mileage, though you may get a better rate if
you rent for several days. Most agencies offer automatic,
stick-shift, and right- and left-hand drive. Four-wheel-
drive vehicles ($55 per day) will get you more places
and are refreshingly open; they are also useful because
so many roads are full of potholes.

Agencies:

Avis (PHONE: 268/462-2840).

Budget (PHONE: 268/462-3009).

Dollar (PHONE: 268/462-0362).

Hertz (PHONE: 268/481-4440).

Thrifty (PHONE: 268/462-9532).

By Taxi:

Taxis are unmetered, and although fares mount up quickly,
rates are fixed (your driver should have a rate card).
Some cabbies may take you from St. John’s to English
Harbour and wait for a “reasonable” amount of time
(about a half hour) while you look around, for about
$40. You can always call a cab from the St. John’s taxi
stand.

St. John’s taxi stand
PHONE: 268/462-5190; 268/460-5353 for 24-hour service).

When is the best weather in Antigua & Barbuda?

Antigua has a comfortable tropical climate, warm and quite dry year-round.
Temperatures range from a low of 23 degrees C at night in winter (January and
February are the coolest months) to a daily high of 30 degrees C in summer (July
and August are the hottest months).

Do I need a passport to visit Antigua & Barbuda?

Passport or proof of U.S. citizenship or voter’s registration card, along
with picture ID, required, return/onward ticket, and proof of funds required
for tourist stay of up to 6 months. Contact the Embassy of Antigua and Barbuda,
3216 New Mexico Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20016 (202/362-5122/5166/5211) for
further information.

Is the water safe to drink?

The tap water on the island is relatively safe and if often used for ice cubes.
That being said it can still cause upset stomachs due its difference in composition
to the water you would normally drink. It is therefore best to drink bottled mineral
or purified water to guard against unnecessary illness while on vacation. Drinking
ice cold water can cause stomach upsets so where possible it is best to skip the ice,
or even wait until your water has warmed up before drinking it.

Do I need electrical adaptors for my hairdryer/radio etc?

Electricity on part of the island is 60 Hz 110 AC, which is the same as in
North America, and the rest of the island is 220 volts. Most hotels have both
voltages.

Should I exchange my money for local currency?

Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of EC$100,
50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of EC$1, and 50, 25, 10, 5, 2 and 1
cents. US currency is accepted almost everywhere.

Currency exchange:
Although the EC Dollar is tied to the US Dollar, exchange rates will vary at
different exchange establishments. There are international banks in St John’s,
and Sterling and US Dollars can be exchanged at hotels and in the larger shops.

Currency restrictions:
There are no limits on the import of local and foreign currency, provided
declared on arrrival. The export of local and foreign currency is permitted
up to the amount imported and declared.

Are there any airport fees?

The departure tax payable by tourists when leaving Antigua is US$ 20.00 or EC$
50.00 and for Antiguan citizens this is reduced to EC$ 35.00 . If you visit
another island the day before flying home for example Montserrat the departure
tax paid on that journey will be valid for your journey home.

What is the legal drinking/gambling age?

The legal drinking age on most islands is 18. That is also the usual legal
gambling age for islands with casinos. To rent a car, the minimun age is
usually 24 or 25, though some agencies on some islands will let people 21
and over rent cars.

Can I get married in Antigua & Barbuda?

Antigua and Barbuda are the perfect setting for a blissful and romantic
wedding, vow renewal, anniversary or honeymoon overseas. There’s a 24-
hour waiting period for marriages on Antigua. A couple appears at the
Ministry of Justice in the capital of St. John to complete and sign a
declaration before a marriage coordinator and pays a $200 license fee.
The coordinator will arrange for a marriage officer to perform a civil
ceremony at any of Antigua’s hotels or another place the couple selects.

The fee for the marriage officer is $50. Several hotels and resorts offer
wedding/honeymoon packages. For more information on civil or religious
wedding ceremonies, contact the Antigua Department of Tourism, 610 Fifth

blood tested for Rabies Titer at an approved laboratory (see below). For more
information contact the Chief Veterinary Officer, PO Box 1282, St. John’s,

Where are the “clothing optional” beaches?

are any rules at your hotel.

ABOUT BERMUDA
Famed for Bermuda shorts, the original Bermuda Onion, and of course the Bermuda Triangle, this island’s tourism has grown significantly over the last 50 years. International business and finance, and light manufacturing are the other industries of note.

HISTORY:
The discovery of Bermuda is attributed to a Spanish navigator, Juan de Berm? who was shipwrecked here in about 1503. No settlement was established, however, until 1609, when a party of English colonists under the mariner Sir George Somers sailing for Virginia, was also shipwrecked here. In 1612 the island group, known as Somers Islands, was included in the third charter of the Virginia Company, and a second group of English colonists arrived. This charter was revoked in 1684, however, and the islands then became a crown colony. Shortly afterward the settlers imported black slaves and, later, Portuguese laborers from the Madeira Islands and the Azores (Portuguese A?es). During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Confederate blockade runners were based in the Bermudas. At the close of the Civil War some Americans, particularly Virginians, migrated here from the United States; the islands later received Boer prisoners, sent by the British government during the Boer War (1899-1902).

Because of their strategic location, the Bermuda Islands formerly served as the winter naval station for both the British North Atlantic and West Indian squadrons; the West Indian squadron still maintains a station here. In 1941, during World War II, sites on the islands were leased to the United States for naval and air bases for 99 years. Bermuda became internally self-governing in 1968. In August 1995 voters in Bermuda soundly rejected a referendum that would have made the island colony independent of the United Kingdom. Premier John Swan, the leader of the United Bermuda Party (UBP), had vowed to resign if independence was not approved; he stepped down shortly after the vote. After a secret ballot of Bermuda’s legislators, Finance Minister David Saul was named the new prime minister. Saul resigned in March 1997 and was replaced by Pamela Gordon of the UBP. In November 1998 the Progressive Labour Party won its first election, with party leader Jennifer Smith becoming prime

PEOPLE / CULTURE:
About three-fifths of the population is descended from African slaves brought to Bermuda before Britain outlawed the slave trade in 1807. Whites include the British and descendants of Portuguese labourers from Madeira and the Azores who went to Bermuda in the mid-19th century. English is the official language, but some Portuguese is also spoken.

Bermuda was first discovered by Juan de Bermudez, the Spanish mariner, in 1503. It was claimed in England’s name by Sir George Somers, in July 1609. After colonization, the island prospered and has continued to do so almost continuously ever since. The tourist industry, catering particularly for the American market, began in Victorian times. Bermuda is the oldest British colony and there are still elements of British culture and customs in almost every aspect of life on the islands.

Bermuda is a British Crown Colony. Its bicameral legislature the Senate with 11 appointed members and the 40-member House of Assembly, elected by universal adult suffrage for a five-year term is responsible for most internal affairs, although foreign policy and security matters are decided by the Governor (John Vereker, since 2002) who is appointed by and represents the British monarch. He in turn appoints the majority leader in the House of Assembly as Premier; the latter appoints the Cabinet.

Bermuda’s economy is dominated by two industries tourism and international financial services which together account for approximately 90 per cent of GDP. Offshore banking and related services have been the mainstay of the financial sector, although in recent years, insurance has grown to the point where Bermuda is now the world’s third-largest insurance market. Tax receipts from several thousand offshore companies registered in Bermuda, plus customs duties, go some way to offsetting the island’s large annual visible trade deficit of around US$500 million. The small light-manufacturing base in Bermuda is engaged in boat building, ship repair and perfume and pharmaceutical production. There is some agriculture, concentrated in the growing of fruit and vegetables, although most of Bermuda’s food is imported along with all its oil, machinery and most manufactured goods. Bermuda has recently established an important diamond market. The USA is the largest trading partner followed by Japan, Germany and the UK.
