ISLAND TOUR*

The journey begins with a road trip through Basseterre with time for shopping, then heads
out along the coastal road to Romney Manor & Brimstone Hill.

DEEP SEA FISHING*

An angler’s delight! Fish for the “catch of the day”, whether it be mackerel, snapper,
king-fish, dolphin, or barracuda. Transportation and drinks included.

RAINFOREST & VOLCANO TOUR*

Visit a dormant volcano, including a 2 1/2 mile hike through a rain forest. Explore the inside
of the volcano crater and enjoy a picnic lunch.

CATAMARAN PARTY CRUISE*

Set sail to Nevis aboard a 52′ catamaran. Stop at Calm Bay for snorkelling, and then onto
Pinney’s Beach for a barbecue lunch and some time in the sun. Full open bar all day.

QUEEN CITY ISLAND TOUR*

Travel to Nevis on the inter-island ferry, and visit attractions including the famous Thermal
Baths, Government House, and St. John’s Angelican Church. A wonderful opportunity to
enjoy the scenery of Nevis.

CARNIVAL

This week-long gala features Calypso contests, street dancing, and festivals.

NEVIS
ALEXANDER HAMILTON MUSEUM

This American historical figure was born on Nevis, and today, the house he once lived in
displays exhibits about his life as well as historical island artifacts.

CULTURAMA

Held in late July, this festive event celebrates the island’s history and folklore with
presentations, talent shows, Calypso contests, and food fairs.

Activities

Beaches

On St. Kitts, the best white sand beaches are on the southern end of the island. These include Sand Bank Bay, Frigate Bay, Friar’s Bay, White House Bay, Banana Bay, and Cockleshell Bay. Of these, Sand Bank Bay is probably the best. The eastern side of the island, facing the Atlantic has surf, and the northern part of St. Kitts has black, volcanic-sand beaches. Nevis has the justly celebrated Pinney’s Beach, as well as a number of other fine, smaller beaches (including the lovely stretch of snad opposite Nelson’s Spring).

Bicycling

At Meadville (Craddock Rd., Charlestown; phone: 469-5235) you can rent both mountain bikes and racing bicycles.

Boating

Cruising and sailing are becoming increasingly popular in St. Kitts & Nevis, and for good reason–in addition to the tradewinds scuffing off the Atlantic, these lush volcanic islands offer sailors remarkable views. There are many local captains and boats available for hire, by the day or week.

Golf

The islands’ three golf courses, two of them professional caliber, are uncrowded and challenging. The beautiful Trent Jones course on Nevis is internationally ranked.

Hiking and Mountain Climbing

Both St. Kitts and Nevis have a good many trails leading into the mountains and rain forests. The local guides are especially knowledgeable here; they will instruct hikers on the medicinal uses of native plants, discuss the islands’ history and culture, and identify local flora and fauna. You may arrange for a guide through your hotel.

Horseback Riding

Most hotels will make arrangements for you. Trips on St. Kitts include beach riding or riding to the rain forest. For those who are more interested in observing than participating, there are twelve races a year at the Indian Castle Race Track on Nevis (see Calendar of Events).

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving are only recently becoming established on the islands, despite that fact that their coastal waters hide dozens of unexplored shipwrecks.

Sport Fishing

Although sport fishing has not traditionally numbered among the islands’ favored activities, careful conservation effortshave succeeded in attracting serious game fish to the waters surrounding these islands.

Tennis

On St. Kitts, tennis junkies should check out Jack Tar Village, where the Davis Park is hosted. Jack Tar has the best internal facilities, with clay, grass and tar court surfaces. Non-guests are welcome to take advantage of all the facilities by purchasing a day pass. You can also check out the local tennis scene at the St. Kitts Bridge and Tennis Club (at Fortlands in Basseterre; phone: 465-2938): and the St. Kitts Lawn Tennis Club (Victoria Rd., Basseterre; phone: 465-2051). On Nevis, the Four Seasons has professional coaches from the world-famous Peter Burwash International. There are also lighted tennis courts for night-time play. For an additional charge, non-guests can play and also take advantage of round-robin tournaments.

Water Skiing

Waterskiing takes place at Frigate Bay, on the Caribbean side (at Roy Gumbs Watersports; phone:465-8050). Jet skiis can be rented at Kenneth’s Dive Center.

Windsurfing

Roy Gumbs Watersports has board rentals and lessons. Tropical Surf on Turtle Beach (phone: 465-2380) also has board rentals.

Dive Operators
There are six dive operators on the islands. Regulators, pressure gauges, and BCs are readily available on the islands. The more exotic underwater props are generally unavailable for rental purposes, so divers are encouraged to bring along
their own cameras, strobes, bottom timers, dive computers and gauges. Most dive operators are not equipped to accept credit cards. There is no chamber in St. Kitts or Nevis; however there are chambers nearby in Puerto Rico and St. Croix.

By Bus:

Privately owned minibuses — many with colorful names like
“Dem Say” and “Rumors” — circle both St. Kitts and Nevis.
They usually charge only about $1 to go most anywhere. Catch
buses by standing on the side of the road in the direction
you want to go, and flag them down. Check with the tourist
office for further schedules and fares.

By Car:

One well-kept main road circumnavigates St. Kitts and is
usually clearly marked, making it difficult to get lost,
though the northeast can get a bit bumpy, and the access
roads to the plantation inns are notoriously rough. The
roads on Nevis are new and beautifully smooth, at least
on the most-traveled north, west, and south sides of the
island. The east coast has some potholes, and pigs, goats,
and sheep still insist on the right-of-way all around the
island. Drivers on both islands tend to travel at a fast
clip and pass on curves, so drive defensively. Driving is
on the left, British-style, though you will probably be
given an American-style car.

On St. Kitts, present yourself, your valid driver’s license,
and EC$50 at the police station on Cayon Street in Basseterre
to get a temporary driving permit (on Nevis the car-rental
agency will help you obtain a local license for $24 at the
police station). The license is valid for three months on both
islands. On either island, car rentals start at about $35 per
day for a compact; expect to pay a few extra bucks for
air-conditioning. Most agencies offer substantial discounts
when you rent by the week.

Agencies include Avis, which has the best selection of
Suzuki and Daihatsu four-wheel-drive vehicles on St. Kitts.
Delise Walwyn also provides an excellent selection and the
option of a replacement car for one day on Nevis if you rent
for three days or more on St. Kitts. Agencies such as Noel’s
Courtesy Garage and Striker’s Car Rentals offer a wide variety
of cars and jeeps for exploring Nevis. TDC/Thrifty Rentals has
a wide selection of vehicles and outstanding service; it offers
a three-day rental that includes a car on both islands.

Avis (S. Independence Sq., Basseterre, St. Kitts, St. Kitts
and Nevis. PHONE: 869/465-6507). Delise Walwyn (Liverpool Row,
Basseterre, St. Kitts, St. Kitts and Nevis. PHONE: 869/465-8449).
Nevis Car Rentals (Newcastle, Nevis, St. Kitts and Nevis. PHONE:
869/469-9837). Noel’s Courtesy Garage (Farms Estate, Nevis,
St. Kitts and Nevis. PHONE: 869/469-5199, www.noelcarrental.com).
Striker’s Car Rental (Hermitage Rd., Gingerland, Nevis, St. Kitts
and Nevis. PHONE: 869/469-2634). TDC/Thrifty Rentals (Central St.,
Basseterre, St. Kitts, St. Kitts and Nevis. PHONE: 869/465-2991,
www.tdcltd.com, Bay Rd., Charlestown, Nevis, PHONE: 869/469-5690
or 869/469-1005).

By Taxi:

Taxi rates are government regulated and are posted at the airport,
the dock, and in the free tourist guide. There are fixed rates to
and from all the hotels and to and from major points of interest.
In St. Kitts you can call the St. Kitts Taxi Association. In Nevis,
taxi service is available at the airport, by the dock in Charlestown,
and through arrangements made at your hotel. Sample fares from the
dock: EC$40 to Nisbet Plantation, EC$18 to the Four Seasons, and
EC$27 to Hermitage.

St. Kitts Taxi Association (PHONE: 869/465-8487; 869/465-4253;
869/465-7818 after hrs). Nevis taxi service (PHONE: 869/469-5631;
869/469-1483; 869/469-9790; 869/469-5515 after dark).

What about island hopping?

Despite its small size, it is easy to be so charmed by Nevis that you can find
no reason to leave, however there are other islands nearby which can make a good
change of scene.

The obvious place to visit from Nevis is St Kitts, which is just ten minutes by
air or about an hour by ferry. St Kitts is very different in atmosphere but it has
plenty to recommend it for a short visit and it also has a couple of delightful small
plantation hotels that make for a lovely longer stay – Rawlins Plantation Inn is in
the best tradition of St Kitts and Nevis’s plantation hotels, the loveliest in the
Caribbean.

Do you need a driving License?

Driving in St. Kitts is on the left side and requires you to have a temporary

What about tipping?

Hotels add up to a 12% service charge to your bill. Restaurants occasionally do
the same; ask just in case if it isn’t printed on the menu; a 15% tip is appropriate
when it isn’t included. Taxi drivers typically receive a 10% tip, porters and bellhops

Is there a best time to visit the island?

The Caribbean high season is traditionally winter — from December 15 to
April 14 — when northern weather is at its worst. During this season you’re
guaranteed the most entertainment at resorts and the most people with whom to
enjoy it. It’s also the most fashionable, the most expensive, and the most
popular time to visit — and most hotels are heavily booked. You must make
reservations at least two or three months in advance for the very best places
(sometimes a year in advance for the most exclusive spots).

Is there an airport?

International airports
St Kitts (SKB) (Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, formerly Golden Rock Airport) is
3.2km (2 miles) from Basseterre on St Kitts. Airport facilities include tourist
information, restaurant and duty-free shop. Taxi fares are regulated; fares from
the airport to Basseterre are approximately EC$17 (50 cents is charged on each
additional piece of luggage over one). Newcastle Airfield (NEV) is 11km (5 miles)
from Charlestown on Nevis.

The Newcastle Airport runway is short. A new runway is under construction to
accommodate larger planes.

Nevis Express (VF) runs a daily round-trip from St Kitts to Nevis
(travel time – six minutes). They also offer charter flights to neighboring
islands

What about Taxes?

Hotels and restaurants collect a Government tax of 9% in St Kitts and 8% in
Nevis. Additionally, service charge of 10% may also be added to your bill.
Although additional tipping is not necessary, it is greatly appreciated by
the service staff, especially when service is good. If you do decide to tip,
an amount equal to 10% to 15% of the bill is recommended.

What about Banks?

Banking hours: Mon-Thurs 0800-1500, Fri 0800-1700. The St Kitts and Nevis
National Bank is open Sat 0830-1130.

The Royal Bank of St. Kitts has an ATM. There are ATMs on Nevis at the airport,
at the Bank of Nova Scotia, at Barclay’s Bank, and at the St. Kitts-Nevis
National Bank. They all accept CIRRUS and PLUS cards.

What about Crime?

There has been an increasing number of crimes against U.S. citizens in St. Kitts,
including armed robbery, break-ins, sexual assault and burglary. In late 2004,
nine Americans were robbed at gunpoint in four separate incidents a few days
apart. While less crime is reported in Nevis, break-ins and burglary have affected
American citizens there as well. Although many of the major resort hotels provide
additional security, U.S. citizens should exercise caution outside these areas.
Valuables left unattended in public places are vulnerable to theft.

Phone cards, which you can buy in denominations of $5, $10, and $20, are handy
for making local phone calls, calling other islands, and accessing U.S. direct lines.

International Calls:

A warning for both islands: many private lines and hotels charge access rates if you
use your AT&T, Sprint, or MCI calling card; there’s no regularity, so phoning can be
frustrating. The country code for the United States and Canada is 1; for Australia,
61; for New Zealand, 64; and for the United Kingdom, 44.

Public Phones:

Pay phones, usually found in major town squares, take EC coins or phone cards.

Rainforest – hiking – dormant volcano to see – 17th centure fortress – hot spring – beautful beaches – Alexander Hamilton House and more…

ABOUT ST KITTS & NEVIS?
St. Kitts is today a (growing in popularity) cruise ship destination, and the surrounding waters are a magnet for scuba divers and snorkelers.

Separated by a narrow channel from St. Kitts, Nevis is dominated by the remnants of a single volcano, and famed for its restored sugar plantations (now secluded inns), black sand beaches and local charms.

Both islands are known for their low-key, relaxed atmosphere, and for their welcoming hospitality.

HISTORY:
(1994 est. pop. 41,000), 101 sq mi (262 sq km), West Indies, in the Leeward Islands. The capital is Basseterre, on St. Kitts. Nevis, the smaller island, has its own assembly and a large degree of political autonomy with respect to its own internal affairs. Agriculture dominates economy, with sugar growing and refining providing the largest share of the islands’ export income. In recent years tourism has grown in importance, and the government has encouraged diversification of the agricultural sector and development of manufacturing. The vast majority of the population are descendants of Africans originally brought to the islands as slaves. English is the official language. The Anglican and other Protestant churches are the predominant faiths. The islands were visited (1493) by Columbus but not settled until 1623 (by the British) and 1625 (by the French). They were awarded (1783) to Britain. In 1967, together with ANGUILLA, which returned to British rule in 1971, they became autonomous in internal affairs, and achieved full independence in 1983. Since 1980 the government has been led by Prime Min. Kennedy Simmonds of the People’s Action Movement.

The islands of St Kitts and Nevis were originally settled by Indians from South America. The UK, France and, to a lesser extent, Spain squabbled over possession throughout the 16th century. By 1623, the UK had prevailed and set about cultivating sugar on plantations worked by large numbers of slaves. It was not until September 1983 that the islands became an independent state within the Commonwealth. Since then, the dominant issues for the nation have been the relative positions of the two islands of St Kitts & Nevis. The possibility of a merger with other Leeward Islands and the Virgin Islands has been debated, as has the growing problem of drug trafficking, in which St Kitts, like most small Caribbean islands, has become involved.

Nevis has a similar history. In 1628 Sir Warner sent a party of about 100 colonists to establish a British settlement on the western coast. Although their original settlement, near Cotton Ground, was destroyed in an earthquake in 1680, Nevis went on to prosper, developing one of the most affluent plantation societies in the Eastern Caribbean. As on St Kitts, most of the island’s wealth was built upon the labor of African slaves toiling in the island’s sugar cane fields. The local tourist industry got its start in the late 18th century on Nevis, where thermal baths made it a popular retreat for Britain’s elite. In 1816, the British linked St Kitts and Nevis with Anguilla and the Virgin Islands as a single colony.

At the time of European discovery, Carib Indians inhabited the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis. Christopher Columbus landed on the larger island in 1493 on his second voyage and named it after St. Christopher, his patron saint. Columbus also discovered Nevis on his second voyage, reportedly calling it Nevis because of its resemblance to a snowcapped mountain (in Spanish, “nuestra senora de las nieves” or our lady of the snows). European colonization did not begin until 1623-24, when first English, then French colonists arrived on St. Christopher’s Island, whose name the English shortened to St. Kitt’s Island. As the first English colony in the Caribbean, St. Kitts served as a base for further colonization in the region.

St. Kitts and Nevis has enjoyed a long history of free and fair elections, although the outcome of elections in 1993 was strongly protested by the opposition and the Eastern Caribbean Regional Security System (RSS) was briefly deployed to restore order.
