LA SOUFRIERE:

The island’s smoldering volcano…hikers can take trails up to the rim of this mammoth for an amazing view, then down to rainforests and through amazing waterfalls. Guides from the Forestry Department are readily available for tours.

CARNIVAL:

St. Vincent’s biggest and most festive event is its carnival, Vincy Mas During the first 2 weeks of July, where the streets become filled with Calypso music, costume parades, and dancing.

CANOUAN ANNUAL REGATTA FACE:

This week-long sailing event held on Canouan happens every August. Festive activities include sailing and fishing competitions, greasy pig and donkey races, cricket matches, and Calypso contests.

Sightseeing:

An island with a rumbling past is now basking in the calm gentle winds that blow through the island. A massive volcano, lush tropical vegetation and the Trinity Falls that cascades down to an impressive 100ft. Unspoiled and untouched St. Vincent is a paradise undiscovered, with an exceptional rainforest, wonderful marine life. Peaceful and uncrowded, this is an ideal spot for a leisure vacation, to get away from it all, to bask in the sunlight and have fun. It is very easy to become engulfed in the peaceful relaxed atmosphere of the island and it’s people. Fly into the paradise that is St. Vincent.

Outdoor Activities:

Sailing:

The trade winds take you to a world of beautiful blue waters. Explore the islands that surround St. Vincent, enjoy a sunset sail or have a romantic excursion on a moonlight night. What ever you desire it is available with charters of any size and time period.

Diving:

Explore the beautiful blue waters that are hosts to some of the most eccentric residents that are lives in the bosom of the sea. A wonderful world of corals and wrecks that make every diving excursion an adventure unto itself. Equipment is available for hire at many of the hotels and schools that provides on the spot courses on the proper execution of the sport. The most popular Dive site is undoubtedly “The Wall” a steep descend from 20 feet to approximately 100 ft. encrusted and populated with the most beautiful marine life. In the waters that are warm year round with visibility of over 100 feet, the island is a haven for divers and both amateurs and experienced alike.

The government sets the rates for fares, but taxis are unmetered
and you should always check the fare before setting off. Fares
are raised for journeys late at night or early in the morning.
The average fare from Indian Bay into Kingstown is approximately
EC$25 and EC$15-20 will get you to the E. T. Joshua Airport from
your Indian Bay or Villa hotel. Tipping is suggested at 10% of the
fare. You can also hire taxis to take you to the island’s major
attractions. Expect to spend EC$40 to EC$50 per hour for a car
holding two to four passengers.

Ruel’s Taxi Service
Address: Sharpe St, Kingstown
Island: St. Vincent
Phone: (1-784) 456-1144 / (1-784) 485-6635

Island: St. Vincent
Phone: (1-784) 456-4338
Fax: (1-784) 456-4233

By Ferry:

Four motor vessels provide scheduled inter-island service. It it
suggested that you arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to scheduled
departure. Schedule is subject to change due to weather and other local
conditions. Visitors should consult their hotelier for the latest
information.

Admiralty Transport Co. Ltd. (J7): Keeps Bequia well connected with
St. Vincent by their dependable, on time ferry service. Also sub-agent
for DHL Worldwide Express Service, Western Union & Caribbean Star Pac.

Admiralty Transport Company 784 458 3348

Bequia Express 784 458 3472

By Car:

Driving in St. Vincent is on the left. While initially driving on
the narrow, twisting roads is a bit of an adventure, you will quickly
begin to enjoy the challenge and start driving like a “Vincy”. There
are limited road signs, but locals are usually quite happy to point
you in the right direction. Remember to sound your horn as you make
the sharp curves and turns. Avis (784-456-4389) has an office at the
airport and the majority of local companies will be happy to pick you
up at your hotel or at the airport. Most agencies, such as Rent and
Drive (784-457-5601 / rentanddrive@vincysurf.com) and David’s Auto
Clinic (784-456-4026) offer similar rates and terms.

A temporary driving licence, costing EC$50, must be purchased at the
police station on Bay Street, or the Licensing Authority on Halifax
Street, with the presentation of a valid overseas driver’s licence.
If you have an International Driving Permit you must get it stamped
at the central police station.

By Bus:

Flamboyantly painted buses travel the principal roads of St. Vincent,
linking the major towns and villages. The central departure point is
the bus terminal at the New Kingstown Fish Market. Fares range from
EC$1 to EC$6 (US$0.40 to US$2.20). Minibuses, which stop on demand
rather than at bus stops, run frequently between Kingstown and the
popular hotel areas of Indian Bay and Villa.

The number of vans starting in Kingstown and running to Owia or Fancy
in the north is limited. The best way is to take the early bus to
Georgetown and try to catch one of the two vans running between
Georgetown and Fancy (EC$10). To get to Richmond in the northwest
take a bus to Barrouallie and seek onward transport from there. A day
trip to Mesopotamia (Mespo) by bus (EC$2.50) is definitely a worthwhile
experience

St. Vincent/ Bequia: Getting Around

By Taxi:

Bequia’s famous open-backed taxis are well known for their courteous
and friendly operators. Taxis are widely used for getting around – to
and from Port Elizabeth, to the beaches, to restaurants – and home
again in the evening!

By Car:

Several car and jeep rental companies operate on the island,
offering both daily and weekly rates. If you want to have the
freedom to explore at your own pace and in your own time,
renting a car or jeep is the choice for you. Some vehicles are
open topped, some are air-conditioned.

Car rentals can usually also be arranged through your hotel,
apartment, or villa.

By Water Taxis:

A popular way to get from Admiralty Bay to Princess Margaret or
Lower Bay beaches, or even just across Admiralty Bay.

You will normally find a water taxi operator on the dock at the
Frangipani or Gingerbread docks, or if there are none in sight
just stand at the end of the dock and one will soon appear!

Cost about EC$15 one way, to the beaches, less for a trip across
the harbour. Make a note of the name of the water taxi so you can
ask for him again.

All water taxis stand by on VHF CH 68.

African Pride (“African”)

Call “African” water taxi on CH 68 and he will find you a mooring
for a reasonable fee (at your own risk), provide a water taxi, or
simply give you good and useful advice about the harbour and its
facilities. African (real name Winston Simmons, but known to everyone
as African) is a mine of information, and knows how to make visitors,
especially those on yachts, feel really welcome.

INTER-ISLAND FERRIES:

Today a regular and efficient ferry service operates between
Bequia and Kingstown, St. Vincent, with two Bequia based companies –
Admiralty Transport (784 458 3348) and Bequia Express (784 458 3472) –
operating four boats between them. Together the two ferries lines offer
seven sailings a day on weekdays, five on Saturdays, with morning and
evening sailings only on Sundays. Each ferry has an air-conditioned
saloon, bar and snack bar, or you can choose to sit up on deck and
enjoy the sea air.

The boats carry passengers and cargo, trucks and supplies from
“the mainland” to Bequia and the arrival and departure of each
ferry in Port Elizabeth is a lively buzz of activity even at
6.30am in the morning!

One-way fares on all ferries are EC$15 per person, and EC$25 per
person return (any time – with the same ferry company).

Ferries to other Grenadine Islands:

The Express and Admiral, operates from Kingstown, St. Vincent
through the Grenadines to Union Island, stopping Canouan and
Mayreau and Bequia.

This is an interesting, adventurous and inexpensive way to see
the Grenadines, but the schedule, and Bequia stops in particular,
are subject to change. Check at the Tourism Office when in Bequia
for up-to-date details.

Connections to Carriacou and Grenada:

M.V. Jasper leaves Union Island for Carriacou at 6:00 a.m. on
Mondays and Thursdays. It leaves Carriacou on the same day at
12:00 noon. The fee is EC$20.00. In addition various fishing
boats leave Union at 7:30 and will drop passengers in Carriacou
for the same price.

From Carriacou you can get to Grenada via the Osprey Lines.
See their ferry schedule at www.ospreylines.com/schedule.htm
for the fishing. Game fish—marlin, tuna and sailfish—are often plentiful in the warm
waters surrounding St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Inquire with your hotel or cruise
ship about chartering a powerboat or motor yacht for sportfishing. The larger islands
offer the most options for arranging a fishing outing. On Bequia, try the Bequia Beach
Club in Friendship Bay (phone 784-458-3248 or 748-457-3198) or at the Frangipani Hotel
best deepwater diving in the Caribbean. Divers can see three varieties of rare
black coral on the stunning wall dive at New Guinea Reef and view the wreck of
the 120-ft/37-m freighter Seimstrand, which went down in Kingstown harbor in
1984 after colliding with another freighter. Contact Dive Fantasea (phone
travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain
updated information on travel and security within St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

1:00-2:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, except Barbados and U.S. holidays.

What about island hopping?

You can take in a number of the Grenadines by island-hopping south. Each island has its
own personality. Spend some time on the island of Mustique. If arriving by yacht, you’ll
enter Britannia Harbour, where Basil’s famous Bar and Restraurant beckons. Hire a taxi
for an island tour, and be sure to stop off at Firefly, a breathtaking inn, restaurant
and bar that overlooks the harbor. Phone 784-488-8414 for more information.
http://www.fireflymustique.com.

Head to ultracasual Union Island, where many small businesses cater to the boating set.
Provisioning companies, Internet cafes, laundry services and marine services are scattered
among fruit and vegetable stands, souvenir shops and small cafes.

Spend the first half of the day exploring noncommercial Myreau—a tiny island boasting a
population of just over 250. You won’t see any road signs—just a single village without
a name and a lovely resort at Salt Whistle Bay to the north. Stop at the Salt Whistle
Bay Club for lunch.

Spend the second half of the day on Palm Island and/or Petit St. Vincent. Both are posh,
small, one-resort islands. You are welcome to visit either island for a meal and a swim,
but don’t get too comfortable there—island visitors who aren’t staying in one of the
resorts must depart by nightfall.

Head to Bequia, the largest of the Grenadines, and spend the day exploring the island.
Bequia is a magnet for sailors, artists and nature lovers. The colorful town of Port
Elizabeth bustles when a ship arrives, whether it is a regular ferry or cruise ship.
The island is the quintessential center for sailors in all of the Grenadines, complete
with miles/kilometers of magnificent swimming beaches and anchorages.

Those lacking enthusiasm or money for such a nautical approach should concentrate on
one or two islands that appeal to their land-based interests. Taking on more than this
in a week is difficult because transport between islands, especially by boat, is time-
consuming. If you have 10 days or more, visit two or three islands.

Can I use my cellular telephone in St. Vincent & The Grenadines?

Providers Cable & Wireless Caribbean Cellular and Digicel. Visitors from North
America can roam on all the islands.

In St. Vincent, cell phones are provided by the bareboat charter companies. AT&T
Wireless is now servicing in The Grenadines. If AT&T is the provider for your own
cell phone, contact them for information on roaming in that area.

TMM provides each charterer with an AT&T mobile phone and a complimentary credit.
This credit may be used to contact the base at any time. The phone may also be used
to send and receive overseas calls. If you want to use the phone to stay in touch
at home, you may purchase additional minutes.

Sunsail will provide a phone (at no charge) on request. You pay a $100 refundable
security deposit and purchase a prepaid phone card at the base.

Barefoot has phones on all their boats. You purchase a prepaid phone card at the
base. If you don’t use it, Barefoot will buy it back from you.

Smart Phones located around the island accept coins, credit cards, prepaid calling
cards and Smart Cards. Cable & Wireless (C&W) prepaid Phonecards are available at
C&W offices and local agents around the islands. Dial 111 and follow the voice
prompts.

AT&T Wireless, Cable & Wireless, and Digicel provide cellular and roaming services.
C&W also rents cell phones.

What is the Dress code in St. Vincent & The Grenadines?

shorts, and short tank tops in public. Men should wear shirts in public. Casually
elegant is appropriate for evening outings. You may want to bring a light sweater/
jacket for evenings.

Do you need a driving License?

Visitors need a local drivers permit, (available for a fee of EC$75 – about US$28)
at the Police Station on Bay Street or the Licensing Authority on Halifax Street.
You must have your own drivers permit.

Tip wait staff and taxi drivers about 10 to 15 per cent. Some hotels and restaurants
automatically add a 10 to 15 per cent service charge to the bill so check first as
it is not necessary to leave an additional tip.

Can you use credit cards?

Major credit cards, traveler’s cheques and US dollars are widely accepted,
although less so on some of the smaller islands.

Travelers cheques:
To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travelers are advised to take
travelers cheques in US Dollars.

Is there a best time to visit the island?

Anytime is a good time to visit St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Twelve-knot
trade winds can be expected from October to July. This isn’t really a factor
since all diving is done on the leeward side of the island where marine
conditions are typically calm. August and September are the doldrums, when the
wind dies down. July to November is the rainy season but brief showers are not
uncommon throughout the rest of the year.

Is there an airport?

ET Joshua (SVD) is 3km (2 miles) southeast of Kingstown. Airport facilities
include car hire, restaurant, bar and duty free shops. Buses and taxis go from
the airport to the city. There are standard fares to a number of major hotels
throughout the island. There are also small airports on Bequia, Canouan, Mustique
and Union Island for light aircraft.

What about Taxes?

The government imposes an airport departure tax of EC$41 (US$15) per person.
A 10% government occupancy tax is charged for all hotel accommodations. Hotels
and restaurants almost always add a 10% to 15% service charge. Ask whether or
not it’s included in the initial hotel rates you’re quoted. If it’s not already
added at a restaurant, tip at that rate. Restaurants and hotels add a seven to
10 per cent government tax to bills.

What about Banks?

Most banks are open Monday to Thursday from 8am to either 1 or 3pm, and Friday
from either 8am to 5pm or 8am to 1pm and 3 to 5pm. There are a few banks with
ATMs on Halifax Street in Kingstown on St. Vincent (plus one at the airport),
and there are also a few on Bequia and Union Island.

World to sailing – lush rainforest – roaring rivers – sascading waterfalls – active volcano – black sand beaches – white sand beaches – cobblestone walkways – oldest botanical gardens in teh Americas and more…

ABOUT ST VINCENT & THE GRENADINES?
The big island of St. Vincent (volcanic in origin) has a rugged mountainous terrain, lush forests and many uncluttered beaches and inlets. The port city of Kingstown is one of the most picturesque in the Caribbean.

The Grenadines includes Bequia, Canouan, Mustique and Union, and a group of smaller (many unpopulated) islands. All are low-lying, ringed by coral reefs, and famed for some of the best beaches and sailing conditions on the planet.

Tourism is a growing business (especially on St. Vincent), but on the outer islands, smaller crowds, isolated beaches and quiet days are the norm.

HISTORY:
Saint Vincent was probably visited and named by Christopher Columbus in 1498. Inhabited by the fierce Carib people, the island was successfully colonized only in 1762 when the British established a settlement. The Caribs were subdued?and many were deported?after an uprising in 1795. Saint Vincent was a member of the Federation of the West Indies from 1958 to 1962. In 1969 it became an internally self-governing member of the West Indies Associated States. On October 27, 1979, it received full independence within the Commonwealth of Nations as Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. A separatist movement in the Grenadines resulted in a brief uprising (1979) on Union Island.

PEOPLE / CULTURE:
First settled around 5000 BC by the peace-loving Ciboney, then by the Arawaks and the war-like Caribs, St Vincent has had a colourful and turbulent history. The fascinating blend of African, Indian, Asian and European influences are expressed in the lifestyle of the people; through religion, sport, music, cuisine, arts and crafts. The annual Vincy Mas’ carnival is a showcase for the best in calypso singing, steelpan orchestras, soca music and masquerade costumes. Cricket and soccer matches are played and watched with a passion.
